INSIDE HOLLYWOOD

Opening Reception Saturday, February 25th from 7p-11p

WHO: Legendary photographer, Phil Stern, recognized for his intimate photographs taken over the years of Hollywood luminaries such as James Dean, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, and many more.

WHAT: In celebration of this year’s Academy Awards, we will be honoring four decades of filmmaking captured by the one and only Phil Stern aka Snapdragon. Phil photographed over one hundred feature film sets including THE ALAMO, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, 1941, & GUYS & DOLLS, to name a few.

Phil’s access on these sets allowed him to capture behind the scenes moments with legendary filmmakers such as Otto Preminger, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg and iconic movie stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, & Judy Garland.

As the Academy Awards honor contemporary film accomplishments, we will be celebrating the filmmakers and icons that have made filmmaking what it is today. From a nail biting Otto Preminger on the set of PORGY AND BESS, to Rita Moreno rehearsing a dance routine for WESTSIDE STORY, to Marlon Brando celebrating with his Academy Award from ON THE WATERFRONT. All these extraordinary images and many more can be seen at INSIDE HOLLYWOOD — An intimate glimpse at the real behind the scenes as only Phil Stern’s lens could capture.

“Since the 1940′s, his pioneering techniques and uncanny gift for stripping the masks off his iconographic subjects-John Wayne, Marlon Brando, Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, and Frank Sinatra, to name only a few – have established his legend. Phil helped to define the movie capital during its golden age; he brought America’s celebrity culture into focus, and into our homes.” Patricia Bosworth, A Life’s Work/powerHouse Books

WHEN: Saturday, February 25, 2012
7:00 pm – 11:00p PST

WHERE: 601 South Los Angeles Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014

MORE: Phil Stern will be in attendance and available for interviews. The exhibition will run from February 25, 2012 until April 21, 2012.

The collaboration of iconic Hollywood Photographer, Phil Stern, and renowned urban artist, David Flores, kicked off in a big way last Thursday, November 10th at Downtown Art Walk. Ninety-two year old Phil Stern was lifted 20 feet in the air to spray paint his signature on David Flores’ stunning James Dean mural on 3rd St. between Main St. and Los Angeles St. outside Suede Studios. Stern’s mesmerizing 1955 image of James Dean was given the Flores treatment and according to Stern, “It ain’t all that bad.”

These two prolific artists will be culminating their collaboration with an exhibition featuring never before seen, one-of-a-kind, works of art at The Phil Stern Gallery opening on December 8th. This exhibition will feature Flores’ unique style and touch to Stern’s prints of Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, James Dean, and many more.

THE WENDE MUSEUM COMMEMORATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BUILDING OF BERLIN WALL WITH DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES ART WALK EXHIBITION OF SOVIET PORTRAITS
In response to the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall on August 13, The Wende Museum announces the launch of ACROSS THE WALL at the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk.

Sixteen portraits reproduced from the Museum’s collection of Soviet paintings were installed on an exterior building wall in the Old Bank District at Main Street and Winston in Downtown Los Angeles to coincide with Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk, which attracts 30,000 people to Gallery Row in the Historic Core on the 2nd Thursday of every month.

The Berlin Wall divided Europe into East and West and pitted the United States against the Soviet Union. But behind the scenes, and beyond the politics, both countries contained diverse peoples with myriad human desires and dreams. Even in modern times does the same sense of adversarial conditions facing people all over the world remind us that we are all friend or foe, we are all Human.

The Old Bank District in conjunction with the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk are proud to bring these 16 expressive portraits and museum quality experience to the streets of Downtown Los Angeles and local community. The mission of the Art Walk is to create a museum without walls experience, and the 16 works from the Wende Museum installed on Main St, bring that concept to life. Pedestrians, cyclists, commuters, visitors and locals alike will now all have an opportunity to experience as part of their normal daily lives. “The Downtown Art Walk is many people’s first cultural experience with the arts.

The works from the Wende collection and the generosity of Old Bank District will add value to the experience for all who attend. The emotion of these portraits reflects life from over 50 years ago, which is not that different from the issues we contend with today. We hope this experience makes appreciating museum quality works more accessible to the community. These pieces reminded us that we are all citizens of the same planet.” said Joe Moller, Executive Director of the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk.

Tom Gilmore from the Old Bank District, a long time patron of the arts and supporter of Art Walk said “Art has always had a home and audience in Downtown Los Angeles. These works represent individuals dealing with life, something we can all relate too and appreciate.”
