Mural Ordinance Update
Greetings:
As you may already know, the City has not allowed the painting of murals on private property for several years now while the Sign Ordinance was being drafted. Planning recently completed this draft, in August, and presented it to City Council’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) committee. Planning has now begun to address issues not covered in the draft ordinance — murals are one of them.
Councilmember Huizar introduced several Motions in the past few years to protect existing murals and to provide for their renovation and conservation. Now that the draft is complete, the City Council is taking up the issue of murals again.
On Wednesday October 12th a joint meeting of PLUM and the Arts, Parks, & Neighborhoods committees are going to consider all pending mural Motions and a report from Planning and the Department of Cultural Affairs, to begin to move forward on this issue so that murals can once again be permitted on private property in Los Angeles.

As the Fourteenth District is home to the largest collection of murals in Los Angeles, Councilmember Huizar wants to ensure that the muralists within our district are aware of and have a voice in any new legislation.
We are holding a meeting on Tuesday, October 11th to give you a brief history of recent mural policy, to discuss what’s being heard at Wednesday’s Committee meeting, and to gather your thoughts on this issue.
