Portraits Of Jazz
Please join the Phil Stern Gallery as we celebrate the heart and soul of jazz along with a jazz trio performance.
Phil Stern captured the legends of jazz such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, and many more doing what they did best- creating the art of music. Whether it be in session, performing, or players just having a good old time admiring the music and each other; Phil was there for it all. His photographic groove was in sync with these musicians groove as they were creating the only art form born in America.
Along with moving shots of an elegant Ella Fitzgerald, an alternately exuberant and sober Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday toward the end of her life, this exhibition will also feature many of Phil’s untouched vintage albums in their original covers signed by Phil Stern,
The freedom and independence of jazz courses though the photographs and vintage album covers of PORTRAITS OFJAZZ.
“I have never seen a portrait of Lester Young- the gentlest and most lyrically swinging of all jazzmen that shows his “soul” as Stern’s photograph does.” Nat Hentoff, A Life’s Work/powerHouse Books.
